How about this...

A reverse fireworks shell... That's right. Instead of streaks of light flying out from the center of the explosion, the shell should explode into a bunch of dark pieces that fly out on the ends of rubber bands all attached to a central mass. Each piece is on a delayed fuse so that it will start to fire just as the elasticity of the band brings it to a stop, so you will see points of light starting from the ouside of the explosion and moving inward toward the central mass.

This could be accompanied by a comical sound effect.

To take care of the fallout, the entire central mass would explode when all the pieces come together, obliterating all the rubber bands into tiny pieces that harmlessly fall into fields for wildlife to choke on.
